The tradition & historical record

1 min read · 1 source

Crafted by Suthar carpenters of Bassi village near Chittorgarh from semal wood coated in mineral vermilion (hinglu), the kavad holds up to twelve hinged painted doors that fold inward toward an innermost sanctum. 1

Itinerant Kavadiya Bhat storytellers travel to patron households across Marwar and Mewar, opening each painted door in narrative sequence while reciting lineage histories and Ramayana episodes. 1
