The tradition & historical record

1 min read · 1 source

Centred in Chhattisgarh around Bhima as hero of the Pandava brothers, Pandavani is performed in two schools: the seated Vedamati mode anchored to Sabal Singh Chauhan's vernacular couplets, and the standing Kapalik mode of improvised dramatic movement. 1

Supported by a ragi vocal respondent who interjects questions and affirmations, the lead narrator transforms the handheld tambura into mace, chariot rein, bow, and royal sceptre. 1
