The Big Challenge Science Festival var en internasjonal vitenskapsfestival som ble arrangert i Trondheim 16.–19. juni 2019. NTNU hadde lederansvar for festivalen, som var utformet i samarbeid med Trondheim kommune og Trøndelag fylkeskommune. Målet for festivalen var å skape begeistring for vitenskap og forskning, både i Norge og utlandet.
NTNU var vertskap for den fjerde STARMUS-festivalen i 2017. Denne festivalen ga gode resultater og høy måloppnåelse, og høsten 2017 avgjorde NTNUs styre at de ville fortsette å arrangere vitenskapsfestivaler, men i egen regi, ikke som del av STARMUS-konseptet.
Det faglige innholdet i festivalen var relatert til NTNUs faglige profil, NTNUs tematiske satsingsområder og FNs bærekraftsmål. Et viktig element var å inspirere og motivere barn og unge for forskning og kunnskapsutvikling. 1
