Festivali korraldatakse 1989. aastast, alates 1993. aastast mängitakse festivalil Edvard Griegi muusikat. Festivali korraldab Peer Gynt as, mis on seotud ka muude Peer Gynti teemaliste ürituste korraldamisega.
Igal aastal külastab festivali umbes 12 000 inimest. Festivali laureaadile antakse üle Peer Gynti auhind.
