Cooking at her family hearth Tlamanalli in Teotitlán del Valle, Oaxaca alongside her five sisters, Abigail Mendoza Ruiz grinds lime-nixtamalized native maize, charred chiles, roasted cacao beans, mamey-seed pixtle, and rosita de cacao blossoms entirely by hand across sloped volcanic-basalt metates. 1

In 2010 she represented Mexico's indigenous women cooks before UNESCO in Nairobi when Traditional Mexican Cuisine was inscribed on the Representative List of Intangible Cultural Heritage, and received Mexico's National Prize for Arts and Literature in 2023. 1
