Serving as founding superintendent of the Government Industrial School at Channapatna under the progressive Diwans of Mysore, Bavasab studied mechanised wood-turning methods from Japan and adapted belt- and treadle-driven precision lathes to local Wrightia tinctoria (aale mara) softwood. 1

By pairing uniform high-speed turning with friction-melted stick-lac tinted using turmeric, indigo, and kumkum, he transformed a cottage craft into Karnataka's enduring geographical-indication toy and lacquerware cluster. 1
