Born into a Bhumij Adivasi family in Baghmundi block of Purulia district, West Bengal, Gambhir Singh Mura perfected the explosive mid-air rotational jumps (ulfa), chest vibrations, and fierce demon-slaying postures of open-air Purulia Chhau. 1

Documented in field studies by folklorist Asutosh Bhattacharyya during the 1960s and 1970s, he led rural Chhau troupes across Europe, Japan, and North America and was awarded the Padma Shri in 1981. 1
