Born into a nomadic Sapera camp near Ajmer in Rajasthan, Gulabo Sapera overcame community prohibitions to bring the whirling black-and-mirror-embroidered Kalbelia dance repertoire—accompanied by pungi reed-pipe, khanjari tambourine, and dholak—onto national and international stages from 1985 onward. 1

Her teaching and advocacy anchored UNESCO's 2010 inscription of Kalbelia folk songs and dances, and she received the Padma Shri in 2016. 1
