Born into a rural dalang lineage in Mojolaban near Surakarta, Central Java, Ki Manteb Soedharsono transformed Wayang Kulit staging by mastering simultaneous multi-puppet sabet combat flourishes behind the oil-lit cotton kelir screen while voicing dozens of Kawi and Javanese characters. 1

Directing full sléndro and pélog bronze gamelan orchestras with foot-struck keprak iron plates across eight-hour unbroken nocturnal performances—including a 24-hour Bharatayuddha record—he received a 2004 UNESCO award for safeguarding Indonesian shadow puppetry. 1
