Born in Essaouira (Mogador) on Morocco's Atlantic coast as the son of Maâlem Boubker Guinia and a descendant of enslaved Malian Bamana soldiers, Maâlem Mahmoud Guinia mastered the full nocturnal derdeba / Lila ceremonial sequence of seven colour-coded spirit suites (mlouk). 1

Driving call-and-response iron qraqeb clapper polyrhythms with deep percussive strokes across the camel-hide neckless guembri lute, he remained Essaouira's foremost ritual custodian while recording benchmark acoustic sessions archived worldwide. 1
