Introduced to capoeira at age ten on the streets of Salvador da Bahia by an African dockworker elder named Benedito, Vicente Ferreira Pastinha founded the Centro Esportivo de Capoeira Angola (CECA) at Largo do Pelourinho in 1941 wearing the black-and-yellow colours of his beloved Ypiranga club. 1

Through handwritten notebooks, paintings, and the 1966 First World Festival of Black Arts delegation to Dakar, Pastinha defended Capoeira Angola as a holistic Afro-Brazilian ritual game of musical bateria authority, close-to-the-earth theatricality, and deceptive cunning (malícia). 1
