Raised in a Zapotec-speaking weaving compound in Teotitlán del Valle, Oaxaca, Porfirio Gutiérrez documented elders' endangered cloud-forest dye taxonomy—fermented wild añil indigo, prickly-pear grana cochineal modified with lime and limestone water, rock moss, and huizache pods ground on volcanic stone metates. 1

Named a National Heritage Fellow and archived by the Smithsonian National Museum of the American Indian, his family studio weaves hand-spun wool tapestries encoding Zapotec lightning, step-fret greca, and agricultural calendars. 1
