Born in Ekchakra-Birbhum, West Bengal, as the son of legendary sadhak Nabani Das Khyapa Baul, Purna Das Baul grew up singing oral dehataatva ('the human body as microcosm') lyrics of Lalon Fakir, Chandidas, and Vaishnava-Sufi sahajiya mendicants at Joydev Kenduli melas. 1

Accompanying his soaring tenor with the single-string bamboo-gourd ektara, clay kettle-drum duggi, and ankle bells while turning in saffron alkhalla robes, he was hailed as Baul Samrat in 1967 and awarded the Padma Shri in 2013. 1
