Born in Chatram Pudukulam in Tirunelveli district and discovered in youth by Tamil comedian-reformer N. S. Krishnan, Subbu Arumugam carried rural Amman-temple Villupattu—sung around a bell-hung seven-foot bow struck with Twin veechukol sticks—into concert halls, radio serials, and published manuscripts. 1

Balancing rapid sung verse, udukku hourglass-drum dialogue, and dry wit, he was honoured with the Kalaimamani, Sangeet Natak Akademi Award (2005), and Padma Shri (2021). 1
