Archival note & context
Bandoneón is attested in the primary archival record for Tango in Buenos Aires & Montevideo, Argentina.
Born in the late nineteenth century among European immigrants, Afro-Argentines, and Afro-Uruguayans in the conventillos of Buenos Aires and Montevideo, tango unites the German bandoneón with habanera, milonga, and candombe rhythms.
In the neighbourhood milonga hall, couples navigate counter-clockwise in tandas of three or four songs separated by brief cortinas, improvising within a shared axis.
