Archival note & context

Dhol is attested in the primary archival record for Chhau dance in Seraikela & Purulia, India.

Chhau blends indigenous martial parikhanda sword-and-shield exercises with episodes from the Mahabharata, Ramayana, and Shaiva Puranas, driven by the thunderous dhumsa kettle drum and mahuri double-reed horn.

In Purulia and Seraikela, performers wear hand-sculpted clay-and-paper masks crafted in Chorida village; in Mayurbhanj, dancers perform unmasked.
