Archival note & context

Gouge & skew chisels is attested in the primary archival record for Channapatna Wood & Lac Turning in Channapatna, Ramanagara, Karnataka, India.

Artisans in Channapatna turn seasoned aale mara (ivory-wood) on bow and power lathes, pressing natural lac-resin sticks directly against the hot spinning timber so frictional heat fuses a mirror-bright finish burnished with screw-pine leaf.
