Archival note & context

Mardala is attested in the primary archival record for Gotipua in Raghurajpur, Odisha, India.

In Odia, gotipua means 'single boy'. Originating in the sixteenth century around the Jagannath Temple of Puri and sustained today in the heritage village of Raghurajpur, boys train from childhood in gurukula akhadas.

Performers combine lyrical abhinaya devotional expression with athletic bandha nritya contortions to the accompaniment of mardala barrel drum, gini cymbals, and harmonium.
