Archival note & context

Unaccompanied voice is attested in the primary archival record for Saman in Gayo Lues, Aceh, Indonesia.

Seated shoulder-to-shoulder on their knees, odd and even numbers of Gayo men execute rapid, interlocking waves of chest-slapping, thigh-striking, and head-tilting while singing verses in the Gayo language.

Guided by a central leader (syekh) who calls tempo transitions and moral verses, Saman requires months of collective nocturnal rehearsal in the village mersah.
