Archival note & context

Violin is attested in the primary archival record for Danza de tijeras in Ayacucho & Huancavelica, Peru.

The Danza de las tijeras (Quechua: Supaypa wasin tusuq) is an indigenous ritual and acrobatic dance originating in the Chanka communities of Ayacucho, Huancavelica, and Apurímac in the southern Peruvian Andes.

Quadrilles of dancers accompanied by violin and Andean harp compete in rigorous multi-hour atipanakuy duels while continuously striking two unconnected polished steel rods that resemble scissors.
