Born in Osaka's Dōtonbori theatre district through the collaboration of playwright Chikamatsu Monzaemon and chanter Takemoto Gidayū, Ningyō Jōruri Bunraku pairs half-life-sized articulated wooden puppets with dramatic chanted narrative. [1]

Three operators—the omozukai (head and right hand), hidarizukai (left hand), and ashizukai (feet)—breathe a single heartbeat into each figure. [2]
