Archival note & context

Whalebone springs is attested in the primary archival record for Bunraku Puppet Theatre in Osaka, Japan.

Born in Osaka's Dōtonbori theatre district through the collaboration of playwright Chikamatsu Monzaemon and chanter Takemoto Gidayū, Ningyō Jōruri Bunraku pairs half-life-sized articulated wooden puppets with dramatic chanted narrative.

Three operators—the omozukai (head and right hand), hidarizukai (left hand), and ashizukai (feet)—breathe a single heartbeat into each figure.
