Resettling with his family from Tangail in East Bengal to Phulia in Nadia district after Partition, Biren Kumar Basak began as a daily-wage handloom weaver before reviving ultra-fine discontinuous extra-weft Jamdani figural muslin weaving across dozens of rural Nadia villages. 1

Mentoring more than five thousand pit-loom weavers—including large women's yarn-preparatory guilds—in high-count cotton and mulberry-silk Jamdani, he received the Sant Kabir Handloom Award and the Padma Shri (2021). 1
