Working in Raghurajpur village near Puri alongside local elders and American craft advocate Halina Zealey in the early 1950s, Guru Jagannath Mahapatra re-anchored Odia Chitrakar studios in traditional tamarind-seed gummed cotton patti, burnt-conch white, hingula vermilion, and haritala yellow stone pigments. 1

In 1965 he became the first craftsperson from Odisha to receive the President's National Award, turning his verandah gurukula into the training ground for dozens of future master painters. 1
