Born into a Pardhan Gond household of hereditary bana spike-fiddle genealogists in Patangarh village, Dindori district, Madhya Pradesh, Jangarh Singh Shyam was invited to Bharat Bhavan in Bhopal in 1981 at age nineteen after scouts noticed his mud-relief courtyard murals. 1

Translating forest divinities—Bada Dev in the saja tree, Marahi Devi, and airborne creatures—into vibrating fields of dots, crescent scales, and wave lines on paper and monumental walls, he mentored an entire generation of Gond artists before his death in Japan in 2001. 1
