The tradition & historical record

1 min read · 1 source

Rooted in the ritual mud-relief wall decorations (digna) and floor patterns (bhittichitra) of Pardhan Gond households in Patangarh and Dindori district, eastern Madhya Pradesh, contemporary Gond painting emerged onto paper and canvas in the early 1980s through Jangarh Singh Shyam. 1

Each artist cultivates an individual signature infill vocabulary—seed-dots, paddy-husks, fish-scales, water-ripples, or bark-striations—bringing Bada Dev's sacred saja tree, forest fauna, and bana-fiddle myths into kinetic equilibrium. 1
