Born into the hereditary Joshi scroll-painting family of Shahpura in Mewar, Rajasthan, Shrilal Joshi prepared hand-burnished, starch-primed khadi scrolls up to thirty feet wide in seven strict earth and mineral colours for itinerant Nayak and Gujjar Bhopa singer-priests. 1

Establishing Chitrashala (Joshi Kala Kendra) in Bhilwara to teach non-hereditary students and document regional epic layouts, he received the National Award, Padma Shri (2006), and Shilp Guru title (2007). 1
