Entering Osaka's Ningyō Jōruri troupe at age fourteen in 1933, Yoshida Tamao rose through decades of black-hooded foot (ashizukai) and left-arm (hidarizukai) service before operating the head and right hand of Bunraku's subtlest male protagonists in Love Suicides at Sonezaki and Chūshingura. 1

Designated a Holder of Important Intangible Cultural Property (Living National Treasure) of Japan in 1977 and awarded the Kyoto Prize in 2003, he proved how a two-millimetre tilt of a carved hinoki neck conveys grief without words. 1
