Archival note & context

Carved colorín wood mask is attested in the primary archival record for Danza de los Viejitos in Jarácuaro, Michoacán, Mexico.

Originating on the island and lakeshore village of Jarácuaro on Lake Pátzcuaro, Michoacán, the Danza de los Viejitos ('Dance of the Little Old Men') honours Tata Jurhiata, the Purépecha sun god.

Performers wear smiling rosy-cheeked wood or corn-paste masks, woven palm hats trailing colourful ribbons, and wooden-soled huaraches that turn the stage into a percussion instrument.
