The tradition & historical record

1 min read · 1 source

Painted in Cheriyal village of Siddipet district, Telangana, traditional Nakashi scrolls begin with handwoven khadi cloth primed repeatedly in boiled tamarind-seed paste, white river clay, and tree gum before receiving an iconic cinnabar-vermilion ground. 1

Divided into horizontal comic-strip registers like pre-modern storyboards, forty-foot vertical scrolls were commissioned by specific occupational communities so travelling balladeers could unroll their patron deity's caste purana episode by episode. 1
